Against the muted tan and sage green desert landscape of southwestern New Mexico, banded ironstone jaspillite gleams beneath the sun.

Bands of crimson jasper, charcoal magnetite, silvery hematite, and dark chert create the layers of this ancient stone with such precision it looks painted rather than formed.
