Green chert formed more than 100 million years ago beneath the warm Cretaceous sea that once covered the Big Bend. Built from the silica-rich remains of microscopic marine life, its olive-green color comes from reduced iron and chlorite minerals formed in low-oxygen waters, contrasting with red jasper variants formed in oxygen-rich settings. Today, weathering frees these ancient stones from limestone, scattering them across the washes and gravel beds of the Trans-Pecos.
